Toni Tolbert Dixon Recommended as New Decatur Fire Chief

5 01 2009

As noted in this week’s commission agenda (and supplementary materials), Toni Tolbert Dixon is being recommend for the open position of Decatur Fire Chief beginning July 1st, 2009.

Her most recent resume can be found on pages 16-21 of the supplementary materials and Peggy Merriss’ letter of recommendation can be found on page 15.

Decatur’s first female fire chief!  Very cool!

I’m thinking this could be a Georgia first too.  This National Report Card of Women in Firefighting (pdf) states that there are only 31 female fire chiefs in the country as of 2008.  Also, “Among the 350,000 paid firefighters in the nation today, the 2000 Census reports that women number slightly more than 11,000 or 3.7%.  This figure places firefighting in the lowest 11 percent of all occupations in terms of women employees.”

Annexation Decision Pushed Back to January

11 12 2008

Linda Harris sends along this note from Peggy Merriss…

In order to continue to analyze options, refine data analysis and provide the best possible recommendation to the City Commission, consideration of annexation options that was a scheduled agenda item for Dec. 15, 2008 City Commission meeting will be deferred until the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009.

Thank goodness.  Glad to know I wasn’t the only one uncomfortable with making this decision (for or against) without all the “refined data.”

Peggy Merriss Wins Pillar of Professional Excellence Award

3 12 2008

The AJC provides a few more details about the state award that our city manager, Peggy Merriss, won a while back.

Though I try not to do too much “copy and pasting” of other people’s articles, this one is kinda buried over on the AJC site, so I’ll provide it in full for your convenience after the jump.

Congrats Peggy!  Certainly well deserved! Read the rest of this entry »
